100 Shouts and still counting for Redcar RNLI
Redcar RNLI volunteer crew has responded to over 100 shouts so far this year. This figure has continued to climb entering October and there's still two months to go before the year end. It is an unprecedented number of shouts for help and one that the volunteer crew will always respond to.
Throughout the year the station's volunteers have attended shouts to sinking fishing boats, people caught in rip currents, missing persons along the coastline, jet skiers and paddleboarders in trouble as well as the rescue of at least a couple of dogs and their owners.
The crew will always respond to a request from the Coastguard to launch the lifeboats when someone is in trouble in the water or cut off by the tide.
Nathan Hobday, Senior Helm at Redcar RNLI, said: ‘By September this year, our volunteers had already responded to more than 100 shouts with the 100th shout taking place on 30 August. What is particularly striking is that several of these shouts have been in response to a mental health related incident, with our crews directly intervening to help people in crisis. It can mean being called out several times a day, and at all hours of the night. While Redcar RNLI volunteers are always ready to respond, it does take a toll on the team.
'With this year’s World Mental Health Awareness Day taking place today (Friday 10 October) this reminds us how important it is to keep talking about mental health and looking out for one another. Redcar RNLI volunteer crew are incredibly proud to serve our community and to be there when people need us most.'
