Beginning on Monday 24 November, two crew were put through their paces on Atlantic-85 lifeboat Tier 2 crew assessments. The candidates, Mark and Nicos, were taken out on separate launches throughout the day to assess their abilities in a number of areas.

Training for RNLI volunteer crews is set to a high standard, to ensure that crew are able to continue to save lives at sea. Nicos and Mark, in undertaking their Tier 2 assessments, were observed in areas such as watchkeeping, hydrology, helming the lifeboat, as well as in aspects of maritime navigation.

Nicos, who went out on the earlier, afternoon run, at approximately 3:30pm, performed admirably in all areas and was confirmed as passed out upon recovery of the lifeboat at around 5:30pm.

The boat was refuelled whilst a second crew mustered for the second assessment of the day, which was Mark’s, launching at around 6:30pm. Mark also performed exceptionally in all aspects of his pass out, returning as confirmed Tier 2 crew at around 8:30pm.

Later in the week, on Wednesday 26 November, another exercise took place, this time to assess Faye in her tractor driving capabilities. Tractor drivers play a crucial role in the launch of the lifeboat, transiting from the boathouse to the launch site, as well as manoeuvring the B-class, inshore lifeboat, whilst on the carriage, into the best place for an efficient and safe launch. Faye’s pass out, which began at around 9am on Wednesday, also covered tractor mechanical theory and emergency procedures. She was completed by around 2pm and had passed with flying colours.

Lee Arnall, Lifeboat Operations Manager at New Brighton RNLI, said:

‘This week has been an exceptional one for our volunteers, who can be really proud of their progress and successes in reaching these next tiers of their training. The hard work of Mark, Nicos and Faye has been duly rewarded, and they can continue to reap the rewards of their enthusiasm and commitment, by taking this next step on their respective RNLI journeys.

We couldn’t be prouder as a station of their achievements to date and look forward to seeing where they go next!’

Notes to Editors:
