Lifeboats News Release

The lifeboat and RNLI shore crew volunteers were sent out to conduct a search of the shore in that area. Both casualties were discovered by a member of the RNLI shore crew and were joined quickly by the lifeboat crew and other members of the shore search team who set about rescuing both casualties from the water.

One of the casualties had fallen from their mobility scooter as it went over the side of the esplanade walkway at Redcar seafront. The other casualty was found waist deep in the water attempting to help them out of the water. The volunteer crew assisted both casualties back to the shore where they administered first aid until the ambulance service arrived.

Mike Picknett Lifeboat Operations Manager at Redcar RNLI said: ‘Our volunteer crew responded quickly which undoubtedly saved a life in what was a very unfortunate accident early this morning. Our volunteers train constantly to be ready to respond to all types of incident and their actions this morning were exemplary.’

He added: ‘If you see someone in trouble in the water call 999 and ask for the Coastguard, this simple action might just help save a life.'
