Redcar RNLI volunteers demonstrate dedication and commitment

Lifeboats News Release

Four volunteer crew members at Redcar have passed major steps in their lifeboat crew journey. Luke Picknett, Ben Cutter, Chris Brogden and Harry Guy were recently assessed by an RNLI Coastal Lifeboat Trainer to check their competence as Lifeboat Helms, navigators and competent volunteer boat crew.

Luke Picknett and Ben Cutter both passed out as Helms enabling them to command the station's Atlantic 85 lifeboat The Leicester Challenge III. To do so they had to pass a written exam as well as prove their competence while commanding the lifeboat at sea where they covered areas such as navigation, emergency procedures and search patterns.

Chris Brogden passed his navigation practical assessment, which included working through a scenario that required the safe navigation of the lifeboat. Chris was given a scenario that required him to demonstrate his capabilities using the on-board systems such as radar while planning search patterns and using his own local knowledge of the surrounding area.

Harry Guy became a fully competent boat crew volunteer by demonstrating his practical skills while at sea including veering, helming as well as elements of navigation and emergency procedures while at sea.

Mike Picknett, RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager at Redcar, said: ‘Training, dedication and commitment are key factors that make up the RNLI’s volunteer crews. All these factors were displayed by volunteer crew members Luke, Ben, Chris and Harry and will be a great asset to Redcar RNLI as we continue to help with saving lives at sea.’
