Lord Lieutenant of Kent visits Ramsgate RNLI
Ramsgate RNLI were delighted to welcome the Lord Lieutenant of Kent, Lady Colgrain to our Station today.
The day started with a visit to Victoria Parade overlooking Ramsgate main beach, where the NCI - National Coastwatch Institue is based. Known as the ‘Eyes along the Coast’, their role is to watch what is happening along the coastline, as well as provide a listening watch in poor visibility. They work closely with the RNLI and the Coastguard.
The Lord Lieutenant asked many questions of the volunteer watchkeepers, and was shown how they would work out the vessels direction and log details.
This visit was followed by a buffet lunch at the local hotel, San Clu where Station Manager Paul Waterman presented Lady Colgrain with Honorary membership as well as appointing her as Honorary President of the National Coastwatch Institution in Ramsgate.
The visit then continued at Ramsgate Lifeboat Station where volunteer crew were able to chat informally with Lady Colgrain before showing her around the station as well as taking her onboard the all weather Diamond Jubilee, where Coxswain Ian Cannon and Second Mechanic Clive Nicholls, demonstrated how to plot a search pattern.
Members of the NCI team were also given a tour of the station and boats which they found very instructive helping them to understand the role of the Lifeboats.
Afterwards the Lord Lieutenant said that she had a fascinating, informative day, and it was clear that everyone worked together like one big family.
