On Tuesday 11 March 2025, volunteers from Rhyl RNLI were undertaking a navigation exercise near Talacre. During the exercise, HM Coastguard in Holyhead radioed the charity’s inshore lifeboat to inform them a member of the public had dialed 999 with reports of a person trapped in the mud near Talacre Lighthouse.

Arriving on the scene within 3 minutes, the volunteer crew discovered that tradespeople working on the lighthouse at the time had managed to free the casualty from the mud. On the helm’s orders, two crew members disembarked the lifeboat and escorted the casualty back to their car where they were helped to warm up, and left in the care of the Flint Coastguard Rescue Team.

Callum Robinson, Helm of the D class lifeboat said:

‘We were glad to be able to assist the casualty after they became stuck in thick mud, which is a common hazard on beaches in the area. With the sun beginning to shine, we’re expecting more people to head to their local coast and during the spring and summer we always recommend choosing a lifeguarded beach where possible, checking the weather forecast and tide times, and paying attention to local safety signage.

‘If you do get stuck in mud, try to retrace your steps to safety or spread your weight as evenly as possible. It’s important to stay calm and avoid unnecessary movement, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.’
