Stranraer RNLI Commemorates 72nd Anniversary of Princess Victoria Disaster

Today, Stranraer RNLI and Portpatrick RNLI stands in solemn remembrance of the 72nd Anniversary of the Princess Victoria disaster, a tragic event that took place on January 31, 1953, resulting in the loss of 130 lives.

This catastrophe not only devastated families but also left a profound mark on the communities of Stranraer and Larne.

Crews from the RNLI battled fierce storms and treacherous seas, undertaking search and rescue operations that showcased their unwavering commitment to saving lives, even in the most perilous conditions.

The sinking of the MV Princess Victoria during a severe storm serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life at sea. As we reflect on this day, we honour the memories of those who lost their lives and extend our heartfelt condolences to the families still affected by this tragedy.

Sean Hannah, Lifeboat Operations Manager, stated, “As we commemorate this significant anniversary, we remember the lives lost and the lasting impact this event had on our communities. Today, we stand together to honour the memories of those who perished and to support the families who continue to feel this loss deeply.”

The RNLI crews, along with local community members and partner agency’s, gathered today for a memorial service, paying tribute to the victims and acknowledging the resilience of those who were affected. The event serves not only as a remembrance but also as a reaffirmation of the strength and unity within our communities, which endure through shared history and collective support.

This anniversary serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the strength found in community. As we pay tribute to the victims and reflect on the resilience of our communities.
