Volunteer Opportunities at Harwich RNLI
Harwich RNLI Lifeboat Station is looking for passionate individuals to join its team in two crucial volunteer roles: Lifeboat Operations Manager (LOM) and Launch Authority (LA).
These roles are an incredible opportunity to make a difference in the local community while supporting the station’s mission of saving lives at sea.
Harwich Lifeboat Station, built in 2002, is home to a B class Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat and a Severn class all-weather lifeboat, which is stationed on a pontoon nearby. The station relies entirely on its dedicated team of volunteers, including lifeboat and shore crews, fundraisers, shop volunteers, and youth education presenters, who work together to respond to emergencies and keep the station running.
The Lifeboat Operations Manager role is ideal for someone with strong leadership skills who thrives in a dynamic environment. This position involves managing the day-to-day operations of the station, ensuring the lifeboats and all associated equipment are always ready for action. While the ability to authorise lifeboat launches is optional, providing leadership to the operational team is key. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain management experience, receive training in decision-making, and work closely with an enthusiastic and motivated team. The role is a three-year commitment, with the possibility of extending up to nine years, offering a meaningful way to contribute to your community while developing valuable skills.
The Launch Authority role is equally vital, focusing on authorising lifeboat launches and ensuring the station’s readiness to respond to emergencies. This role suits someone who can provide leadership in the absence of the Lifeboat Operations Manager and has a good understanding of local maritime activities. It’s a rewarding opportunity to be part of a team dedicated to saving lives, with the chance to learn new skills, gain valuable experience, and work within an inclusive and supportive organisation.
Both roles come with comprehensive training, and volunteers will be reimbursed for reasonable out-of-pocket expenses. These positions require individuals who are strong communicators, natural team players, and live or work close to the station.
Volunteering with the RNLI is about more than saving lives at sea—it’s about joining a close-knit team, meeting new people, and making a real impact on your community. Whether you’re looking to gain new skills, enhance your CV, or simply give back, these roles offer a fulfilling way to do so.
If you’re ready to step up and make a difference, we’d love to hear from you. To find out more about these opportunities, visit RNLI’s volunteer page.
