The volunteer crew train twice a week throughout the year and yesterday was no different as training took place for approximately two hours with the crew returning to the station at 12 midday to refuel and wash down the lifeboat getting it ready for service.

The first call out of the year came at 1.45pm when the Irish Coast Guard requested the station's crew to launch the inshore lifeboat following a call by a member of the public to a wing foiler who appeared to be in difficulty off Strandhill beach. Upon arrival at the scene, the lifeboat crew checked in with the wing foiler who reported that everything was ok and they were not in need of assistance.

As the lifeboat proceeded back to the station, they received a second call out to another wing foiler who seemed to be in difficulty close to the shore in Rosses Point. Thankfully, they were able to make their way to shore unaided, and a member of the lifeboat crew checked in with them to ensure they didn't require any medical assistance .
The crew then returned to the station, where they refuelled and made the lifeboat ready for service.

Aisling Gillen, Sligo Bay RNLI Lifeboat Press Officer said: 'The first call out proved to be a false alarm with good intent and in the second incident, the wing foiler was able to make it ashore without our aid. We would like to commend those who raised the alarm as we would always much rather launch to find all is well than not launch at all.'
