Brian, from Uplyme, served for some 20 years in several volunteer roles including manager of the RNLI gift shop, and treasurer of both the lifeboat station and the fund-raising lifeboat supporters' group.

During Lifeboat Week last year, he was presented with his 20 years volunteer service medal by the RNLI’s Chief Executive Peter Sparkes.

Brian, who had a varied career in retail management, kitchen design and plumbing, was an active member of his local horticultural society and Axminster Operatic Society. He was also a keen member of indoor bowls teams at Cloakham Lawns, Axminster and Honiton.

Chairman of the lifeboat supporters’ group Ken Lavery said: ‘Brian epitomised all that is best in volunteering. Among his many fund-raising achievements, he developed the now famous water and wine stall in Lifeboat Week which raised many thousands of pounds for our lifesaving charity. We will miss his quiet wisdom.’

Brian leaves Jo, his wife of 53 years, and son Jay, a chef based in Cornwall.
