Karem Redfearn has joined the shore crew at the RNLI lifeboat station and becomes the fourth female member of the team which now stands at a total of 36 men and women.

The other three women are sea-going crew members Maria Barbashina and Joe Street and shore crew volunteer Petrina Muscroft.

The man at the helm of the lifeboat station, Operations Manager Mark Colley said: 'We are delighted to welcome Karem aboard. We now have a record number of four female crew and that is an important milestone for us all.'

Karem, 55, a delivery courier and mother of three, who used to run a 100 acre farm in the Godstone area of Surrey with beef, dairy cows and sheep, moved to Lyme Regis with husband Simon who works in the dairy technology industry.

She said: 'When we arrived in the town I was keen to be involved in a worthwhile activity, and the RNLI, with its aim to save lives at sea, seemed like the perfect answer. I asked at the lifeboat station if they needed any more volunteers and was delighted when they said yes.'
