Commemorative King’s Coronation Medals presented to Newhaven RNLI

Volunteer crew of Newhaven RNLI gathered at the lifeboat station on Sunday 2 February for the presentation of King’s Coronation Medals by Lucinda Fraser DL the High Sheriff of East Sussex. To recognize the dedication and commitment of these RNLI volunteers who save lives at sea.
To mark RNLI Patron, His Majesty The King’s Coronation, special commemorative medals have been awarded to serving frontline members of the emergency services, prison services and the Armed Forces.
Recipients of the commemorative medal at Newhaven RNLI are volunteer crew who had completed five years of service and were in service on 6 May 2023, the day of the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla.
Lucinda Fraser DL, High Sheriff of East Sussex, says: ‘I am humbled by the number of people in East Sussex who volunteer such impressive amounts of their time to help others in need.’
Acting as a token of the nation’s thanks, The King’s Coronation Medal follows a long history of awarding medals to mark Royal celebrations, with the first one awarded to mark the 50th year of Queen Victoria’s reign in 1887. The King’s Coronation Medal is the first medal issued during the reign of King Charles III and celebrates the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla on 6 May 2023.

Newhaven RNLI recipients of His Majesty The King’s Coronation Medal are: Roger Cohen MBE (Lifeboat Operations Manager), Lewis Arnold (Coxswain Mechanic), Lee Blacknell (Second Coxswain), Gary Marsh (Launch Authority), Nick Gentry (Navigator Mechanic), Alex Beckett (Navigator), Henry Prout (Mechanic), Will Morris (ILB Helm), Jo Goode (Crew), Katie Dusart (Crew), Billy Hipperson (Crew), Alvaro Rodrigues (Crew) and Dr Francis Nicholls (Lifeboat Medical Advisor).
After the presentation of Medals Lucinda Fraser DL, High Sheriff of East Sussex, was given a tour of Newhaven RNLI by the station’s current longest serving volunteer crew Nick Gentry. The tour included a visit aboard Newhaven’s all-weather lifeboat, the Severn class David and Elizabeth Acland.

Notes for the Editor
Newhaven Lifeboat was first established in 1803. Newhaven Lifeboat Station has been RNLI operated since 1854. The Newhaven volunteer crew have operated their current all-weather lifeboat, the Severn class ‘David and Elizabeth Acland’ for 25 years. Newhaven RNLI also operates a D class inshore lifeboat that began its two-year trial of service in August 2024.

The RNLI charity saves lives at sea. Its volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts. The RNLI operates 238 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland and more than 240 lifeguard units on beaches around the UK and Channel Islands.
