The Coastal Users’ Group (CUG) is made up of a number of organisations and companies with an interest in Hastings seafront area, and acts as an advisory group to Hastings Borough Council’s charity committee, which manages the Foreshore Trust. The Trust own the foreshore in Hastings, under an arrangement which dates back to the days of the Cinque Ports.

Kevin Boorman, a launch authority who represents the RNLI on CUG, said : “It was great to be able to show the other members of Coastal Users’ Group behind the scenes at Hastings lifeboat station, and explain the particular challenges which face us. This includes the issue of shingle accretion, creating a very steep bank which our lifeboats have to navigate. The Hastings fishing fleet, with which we share the beach, faces the same problem and it was good to see Paul Joy, chairman of Hastings Fishermen’s Protection Society, at the meeting.”

Christine Boulton-Lane, chair of CUG, added :- “Members of the Coastal Users’ Group are visiting various members’ premises, and it was so interesting to be able to have a good look around the RNLI lifeboat station, and its two lifeboats. We are very grateful to the RNLI for allowing us such access, and to Paul McCleery, the full-time coxswain of the Shannon lifeboat based at Hastings, for giving up his time to talk to us.”
