Porthcawl RNLI launches to paddleboarders and people cut off by the tide
During the recent spell of sunny weather in the first few weeks of April Porthcawl RNLI’s volunteer crew have been called out to two reports of people cut off by the tide and to paddleboarders in difficulty.
As the weather improves it’s a timely reminder to take care when visiting the coast and follow important RNLI safety advice.
Porthcawl RNLI lifeboat operations manager Andrew Walmsley says: ‘always check conditions and tide times before visiting the coast using a trusted online source, such as the Met Office. If you’re paddleboarding wear a buoyancy aid and don’t go out in off shore winds. If you can always go with a friend and tell someone where you are going and when you’ll be back. Always take a means to call for help such as a mobile phone (in a waterproof case if you’re going afloat).'
In one of the call outs to people who were cut off by the tide a crew member went ashore to assess the situation and speak to the group of 5 people. The group were an experienced group of climbers who were well equipped and intended to stay where they were until the tide receded. The group were advised to contact the coastguard before setting out so they were aware of their intentions and avoid any further callouts to them.
In a coastal emergency dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
