St Bees RNLI puts out its own Mayday call to help raise vital funds
St Bees RNLI is calling on the local community to get involved and take part in the Mayday Mile SOS Challenge on Mayday Bank Holiday Monday May 5 at St Bees Lifeboat Station.
Funds raised will help support the charity’s vital lifesaving work, including the provision of important training and kit for the volunteer lifeboat crews who readily risk their own lives to save others whenever the call for help comes in. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has today released its rescue figures for 2024, which show the charity’s lifeboats in the North West launched over 333 times last year, saving 18 lives.
St Bees Lifeboat Station in Cumbria are hosting a collective Mayday Mile Challenge on Saturday 5 May. Volunteer Crew Member Joe Raymond says:
‘We’re heading towards our busiest time of year, so we’re putting out our call for help to raise the funds which will help keep our lifesaving service going today and allow us to be there when we’re needed most.
‘The idea behind our event is to get as many people as possible to walk, run, jog or push a pram along a course starting at the lifeboat station and looping along the promenade.
‘The aim will be to collectively travel 505 miles, resembling ‘SOS’ and raising as much money as possible so we can continue saving lives at sea.’.
Kerry-Beth Quinn, a fellow volunteer Crew Member with St Bees RNLI says:
‘Usually it’s our crew heading out to respond to Mayday calls, but now we’re the ones asking for help. Lifeboats in the North West launched hundreds of times in the last year to help people in danger in the water, but everything we do is only possible thanks to the generosity of our supporters’
Further information about the event will be shared on St Bees RNLI social media profiles closer to the event.
