Lifeboats News Release

This Sunday (22 September) representatives from The Mumbles RNLI were busy signing the RNLI Scroll when the pagers went off for a boat in difficulty off Mumbles Pier.

The boat with 3 people on board had suffered engine failure. On arrival to the casualty vessel a lifeboat crew member was placed on board to assess the situation. Due to being unable to restart the engine and the vessel at risk of drifting, causing potential danger to other vessels and themselves, a decision was made to establish a tow. The vessel was brought to the nearest safe location at Knab Rock in Mumbles where it was recovered.

The inshore lifeboat completed its mission and the crew were back in time for tea and cake by 11am.

Jack Cawsay-Williams, Helm on the shout said:

'The skipper of the broken down boat did exactly the right thing in calling for help when he did. Everyone on board was wearing a life jacket. We encourage everyone to regularly check the engines, wear a lifejacket and have a means of calling for assistance - so you can call for help if anything happens.'

Before having to launch the inshore lifeboat, The Mumbles RNLI crew were actually gathered to celebrate the The RNLI’s ‘Connecting our Communities’ relay-style event – one of many ways the charity is marking its 200th anniversary in 2024.

The event sees a scroll, bearing the RNLI pledge, being passed through RNLI communities – lifeboat stations, lifeguard units and fundraising branches – around the UK and Ireland and being signed by representatives at each location on its route.

The pledge reads: ‘Whoever we are, wherever we are from, we are one crew, ready to save lives. We’re powered by passion, talent and kindness, like generations of selfless lifesavers before us. This is our watch, we lead the way, valuing each other, trusting each other, depending on one another, and volunteering to face the storm together. Knowing that, with courage, nothing is impossible. That is what has always driven us to save everyone we can. It's what makes every one of us a lifesaver.’

Beneath the pledge, printed in seven languages (English, Irish Gaelic, Welsh, Scottish Gaelic, Ulster Scots, Manx, and Cornish), it says: ‘Signed in 2024 by representatives of the RNLI’s lifesaving communities, on behalf of all who strive to save lives at sea.

At The Mumbles Station, the scroll was signed by Tim Conway (Operations Manager), Kate Croall (Water Safety Advisor), Anne Raey (Shop Manager), Adam Bere & James Cunliffe (Volunteer Crew).

Throughout its 200th anniversary year, the charity is running events and activities to remember its important history and celebrate the modern lifesaving service it is today while hoping to inspire generations of future lifesavers and supporters.
