
Plymouth RNLI celebrates Coxswain pass out
Plymouth RNLI volunteer crew member Will Roberts has become the latest fully qualified coxswain on Plymouth’s Severn class all-weather lifeboat after successfully completing his final assessment recently.
Will, who has been with Plymouth RNLI for 12 years and 6 years before that with Horton and Port Eynon lifeboat in South Wales, is also an inshore lifeboat helm an all-weather lifeboat mechanic and navigator. Will is now qualified to take command of the all-weather Lifeboat as Coxswain.
Will took command of the Plymouth Lifeboat and crew on a pass-out exercise that included a series of tasks ranging from search and rescue unit boat handling to radar and navigation management, managing anchoring, search and rescue unit firefighting, command of buoyage systems and local knowledge, and command and management of search and rescue. Will was also tested on his leadership skills and crew management.
Will said: ‘I am really happy to have achieved a pass out a Coxswain after many months of exercises and assessments, thanks to all the Coxswains and crew on station for supporting my training and Lyle the local Assessor Trainer. I look forward to growing in the role over the coming years.’
Lifeboat Operations Manager Chris Westall said: “Will has put in a lot of hard work for this, lots of time and dedication. All the volunteers at Plymouth RNLI and I would like to congratulate him on his Pass Out as an all-weather lifeboat Coxswain. This achievement strengthens the crew at Plymouth RNLI.”
