On Friday, 13 September 2024, as part of our 150th anniversary celebrations, the Longhope Lifeboat Guild hosted a cheese and wine evening, featuring a special screening of ‘Launch! On the Sea with Scotland’s Lifeboats.’
The event was held at the intimate Gable End Theatre, with an impressive turnout of over thirty people, offering a wonderful chance for members of our small community to come together. As always, the Lifeboat Guild went above and beyond in organising an enjoyable event. Attendees were treated to a wide variety of snacks, along with a raffle to raise funds for the RNLI.
Launch! offers a moving tribute to the men and women who risk everything to save lives at sea. In contrast to the lively chatter during the pre- and post-film drinks, the audience was completely engrossed while the documentary played - you could have heard a pin drop.
The film runs for forty-four minutes and is a captivating documentary that explores the rich history and heroic efforts of Scotland’s lifeboat crews, who have dedicated their lives to saving others at sea. It takes viewers on a journey through the RNLI's work in Scotland, showcasing the bravery and commitment of volunteers who respond to emergencies in some of the most challenging maritime environments.
Featuring real-life rescue stories, interviews with lifeboat crews - including our very own volunteer Coxswain, Angus Budge - and stunning footage of Scotland’s rugged coastline, the documentary highlights the vital role the RNLI has played for nearly 200 years in safeguarding lives at sea. It also provides insight into the training, teamwork, and sacrifices required to operate the lifeboats, while celebrating the close-knit communities that support the organisation.
The event was a fitting way to celebrate our lifeboat station's remarkable history, while also looking to the future and recognising the ongoing importance of community support.
