As a charity run entirely on donations, the RNLI is always happy to receive support from members of the community, no matter how large or small. This year, the crew at Clovelly station were delighted to receive a pair of unique donations towards their fundraising efforts: a handmade quilt, crafted by relatives of current RNLI crew, and a beautiful painting of the Clovelly lifeboat by local artist David Rampling.

The quilt is based on a design by Tula Pink and features patchwork by Janice Dalziel, partner of Clovelly’s Lifeboat Operations Manager James Dalziel, and custom quilting by Sarah Willet of Ambleside Quilting in Kilkhampton. In order to raise funds, volunteers at Clovelly RNLI have decided to raffle off the 7ft x 7ft quilt, with tickets on sale at £2.50 each from Clovelly Lifeboat Station and the Red Lion Hotel. The raffle will close October 21, 2024, with the big draw held the following week.

Meanwhile, another fundraising avenue was opened up by the donation of a painting by Mr. Rampling, who lives in Clovelly. Featuring the station’s Atlantic 85 B-Class Toby Rundle, the piece carries on a long tradition of local artists painting the lifeboats stationed at Clovelly.

At this year’s Lifeboat Day on August 4th, the original was gifted to the Rundle family, who raised £170,000 to have the lifeboat built in memory of their late son back in 2012. Now, the crew have commissioned a limited run of 200 prints to mark the 200th anniversary of the RNLI. Prints will be hand-signed and numbered by the artist and available for sale at £100 each from Sunday 8th September. Purchases can be made by visiting the station when open or by contacting [email protected].

This summer has proved a particularly busy one for the volunteers at Clovelly RNLI, who train all year round to be ready to save lives at sea. Generous donations such as these beautiful artworks help to ensure that their work can continue for many generations to come.
