Littlehampton RNLI in search for volunteer shore crew
Littlehampton RNLI Lifeboat Station is looking for men and women from the local area to help launch its lifeboats.
The lifeboat station, which is in the heart of Littlehampton Harbour and is manned entirely by volunteers, needs shore crew to join its friendly team. Shore crew have a crucial role at Littlehampton RNLI. They help with the launch and recovery of the station’s lifeboats on service and exercise. They also contribute to the overall upkeep of the lifeboat station, lifeboats and equipment.
Volunteer shore crew at Littlehampton RNLI:- Launch, recover and clean the station’s two lifeboats – Renee Sherman and Ray of Hope
- Prepare and maintain the station’s equipment
- Drive the station’s two tractors – a New Holland TL80 and a New Holland Boomer
- Keep the lifeboat station in good order.
All shore crew are given a pager. Those interested in the role will therefore need to be local to Littlehampton and be able to get to the lifeboat station quickly if Littlehampton RNLI is called into action. Full training and support will be given for this volunteer role.
Chris Stewart has been shore crew at Littlehampton RNLI since September 2023. He said: ‘It's great being part of the Littlehampton RNLI shore crew, helping to provide a crucial service for Littlehampton and the wider community. I really enjoy the training and learning new skills that are put into practice when there is a shout. There is an amazing team here at Littlehampton, who are always very welcoming, supportive and helpful in fulfilling this rewarding role.’
Mike Meakin has volunteered as shore crew and chaplain at Littlehampton RNLI since November 2023. He added: 'Having served in the Royal Navy for 40 years and being a 'yachty', I have seen the immense value of the RNLI. Now retired, I can give back the protection I have – and continue – to receive. Joining Littlehampton RNLI as shore crew and chaplain has been an eye opener. The commitment, courage and dedication of the crew is second to none, and I am honoured to be part of it.'
