The UK Coastguard asked if the Swanage lifeboat could assist in getting a sailor to shore to receive medical attention after becoming ill on board.

The lifeboat launched and made contact with the naval vessel, which was passaging through Poole Bay at the time.

After a brief discussion, both boats matched speed and heading while the lifeboat came alongside to effect an underway transfer using the vessel's Pilot ladder. The casualty and an escort were quickly aboard and a route plotted to Poole Harbour.

An ambulance was requested to rendezvous at North Haven ferry steps and the local volunteer coastguard were also tasked to meet the lifeboat.

The casualty's condition was monitored during the short passage to Poole and then both sailors were handed over to the care of the local coastguard while awaiting the ambulance.

The lifeboat left the scene to transit back to Swanage, and was washed down ready for further service at around 9.30pm.
