Beaumaris Lifeboat volunteers tasked to a yacht with a broken tiller
At 6.24am on Sunday 27 October 2024 the volunteer crew members of the Beaumaris lifeboat received a page from the U.K. Coastguard relating to a 20 foot yacht with a broken tiller two miles south of Puffin Island.
The lifeboat volunteers launched and proceeded to the location given, once the vessel had been located and a safe passage negotiated over the Lavan Sands to the craft a lifeboat crew member was placed aboard the boat,.
Having ensured that all was well with the sole adult aboard. an assessment was made by the helmsman in consultation with the volunteer lifeboat crew member aboard the vessel and H.M. Coastguard as to the best course of action to be taken.. It was decided for safety reasons that the boat should be towed to the nearest place of safety.
The lifeboat then towed the boat to Beaumaris pier where members of the Penmon Mobile Coastguard team had arrived to assist.
Once this had been completed the lifeboat was released by the coastguard to return to her station.at Beaumaris returning at 7.48am to be refuelled and cleaned. Once this had been completed the crew left the station.
A RNLI spokesman said: ‘The yacht crew did the correct thing in alerting the Coastguard to their predicament. This meant our volunteer lifeboat crew were able to reach the casualty quickly, assess the situation and take the best course of action to prevent the situation worsening.’
