The lifeboat was soon on scene and members of the public directed the volunteer crew to the west side of Bournemouth Pier.

With the swells breaking close to the shore, the lifeboat carefully manoeuvred in and gained sight of the person in difficulty close to the pier

The D class was also requested to launch.

Coastguard Rescue Teams on the pier assisted by illuminating the area.

The lifeboat manoeuvred as close as they could in the swells and a crew member threw a throw line to the person.

Thankfully the person held onto the line while the lifeboat crew pulled them towards the lifeboat and lifted them onboard.

With the person being extremely cold the lifeboat crew wrapped them up and headed back to the lifeboat station and to a waiting ambulance.

Poole helm, Dave Riley said: ‘We’re thankful to the bystander who called 999 and alerted the coastguard, any delay could have resulted in a very different outcome.’

This was launch 102 this year.
