As a volunteer, Nick has successfully completed his probation and is now ready to go solo, sharing the life-saving work of the RNLI with the wider community.

Reflecting on his achievement, Nick likened the experience to passing a driving test, ‘There are so many unknowns to learn and experience, but it’s incredibly rewarding. It feels like a real accomplishment,’ he said.

Nick’s journey with the RNLI began when he moved back to Penarth and sought a way to reconnect with his community. Initially volunteering to guide visitors around the station, he was inspired by the commitment of the lifeboat crew and the opportunity to engage the public with the RNLI’s mission. ‘I wanted to give something back and was amazed by the dedication of those who volunteer their time for others,’ he shared.

The role of Lifeboat Press Officer comes with its unique challenges, requiring a mix of media skills, social media expertise, and the ability to manage sensitive information while upholding the RNLI’s reputation. Nick acknowledged the steep learning curve: ‘The biggest challenge has been understanding how to deliver news respectfully and responsibly, especially when dealing with sensitive situations. There’s a self-imposed pressure to get it right because what we do carries real gravity.’

For Nick, one of the standout moments during his probation was attending the RNLI’s 200th Anniversary Thanksgiving Service at Westminster Abbey. ‘It was profoundly humbling to be surrounded by so many lifesavers who have been so selfless. Seeing our Helm, Jen, involved in the ceremonies made me incredibly proud.’

Nick emphasised the invaluable training he received, which prepared him for the responsibilities of the role. ‘The RNLI provides fantastic training sessions that really challenge your thinking and equip you to handle difficult scenarios. The trainers share their wealth of experience, which has been pivotal for me.’

As an LPO, Nick acts as a bridge between the station’s operations, fundraising, and community engagement, ensuring the public understands and supports the RNLI’s life-saving work. ‘This role has deepened my appreciation for the importance of every volunteer’s contribution. It’s a reminder that even the smallest actions can have a significant impact.’ he said.

When asked what advice he would give to aspiring LPOs, Nick said, ‘Be prepared for the time commitment. It’s often said to take just a couple of hours a week, but the more you put in and become part of the RNLI’s "One Crew", the more you get out of it and want to engage even more! It’s incredibly fulfilling, and the time flies by.’

Nick’s passion for the RNLI and dedication to his role highlight the incredible effort of volunteers who help save lives at sea. Congratulations Nick.
