Lifeboats News Release

Donations of knitted and crocheted poppies have been kindly sent in over the past few weeks from members of our Teignmouth RNLI local community, as well as supporters from afar.

The project has been overseen by Volunteer Engagement Crew Anne Steel Arnett, who has been hard at work bringing the installation to life. She thanked ‘all those who have contributed, without their efforts this wouldn’t have been possible’.

The poppy flowerbed includes the names of all 336 names listed on Teignmouth’s war memorial, which have been written on the leaves as part of the poppy garden. The poppies will be on display for 11 days before being packed away and stored for future years.

A second memorial wreath has also been created which will be handed over to a special Poppies to Paddington Service organised by Great Western Railway, which will stop at Teignmouth Train Station at 6.57am on Monday 11 November.

Now in its fifth year, the Poppies to Paddington operation will feature 10 GWR trains carrying hundreds of wreaths from RNLI communities. On arrival in London, the wreaths will be laid at Paddington station’s war memorial on Platform 1 ahead of a special service of remembrance.

Today, Sunday 10 November representatives from Teignmouth RNLI, have also been in attendance at memorial services which have been held in Teignmouth and Shaldon, with a dedicated poppy wreath laid at memorials in each location.
