Poole training

On Monday 4 November, Matty, Anthony and Chris, began the training at RNLI College in Poole to undertake in their Crew Emergency Procedures (CEP) course at the RNLI Sea Survival Centre.

The CEP course is designed to equip lifeboat crew members with essential skills to handle emergency situations effectively. During their training, then three Newbiggin RNLI volunteer crew engaged in various critical exercises, including capsize drills, lifejacket usage, and equipment handling. This training not only enhances their proficiency in RNLI protocols but also certifies them in the STCW 95 standard.

Part of the course also focussed on the firefighting techniques needed on the lifeboat in an emergency as well as the use of pyrotechnics.

Back at Newbiggin RNLI station Wednesday 6 November saw further training for prospective Helm Mark who was passed out on his navigation and as a new helm. The pass out consists of carrying out several tasks set by RNLI assessor Matt to ensure that the helm can safely control the lifeboat and instruct the volunteer crew according to set procedures. A written exam also must be passed as part of these assessments.

Also Brain, another Newbiggin RNLI volunteer crew, was passed out on his navigation training by RNLI assessor Matt during the same training session.

Matty, one of the Newbiggin volunteers on the away training said 'The Newbiggin volunteers had an intense two days at the college with a lot of information to take in. It was fascinating to see all the SAR (search and rescue) equipment in one place, and the course itself was very well instructed.'
