Redcar RNLI volunteers rescue two people cut off by the tide
On Sunday afternoon, 3 November, Redcar RNLI volunteers were paged to rescue two people who had been trapped by the incoming tide under the cliffs at Saltburn.
Both Redcar lifeboats attended the rescue and while the Atlantic 85 the Leicester Challenge III stood by providing the radio link with the Coastguard, the D Class lifeboat, the Eileen May Loach-Thomas moved in under the cliffs to carry out the rescue.
Once the crew were ashore, they put life jackets onto the casualties and guided them onto the D Class lifeboat from where they were taken back out to the Atlantic 85. The casualties were then transferred to the slipway at The Ship Inn where they were passed over to the Coastguard. Both were in good health but cold and wet.
Ben Cutter, helm on the D Class lifeboat said: ‘The casualties were stranded on a very small piece of beach. The tide was coming in very quickly but our volunteer crew speedily readied both casualties for a safe recovery under what proved to be very awkward conditions.'
Mike Picknett, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Redcar RNLI said: ‘Our crew acted with great professionalism in carrying out a very tricky rescue. If you are ever attempting to walk along our coastline, always remember to check the tide times before you set off and be sure you to let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return. Of course, if you think you see someone in trouble do not hesitate to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.'
