Fred Day, from Uplyme, was honorary secretary in charge of the town’s lifeboat station from 1987 to 1994. Three senior members of the current lifeboat crew paid tribute to Fred when they attended his birthday celebration last week. They also presented him with an inscribed tankard to commemorate his achievement.

Fred was a chief engineer in BP oil tankers and when he retired he was presented with a ship’s bell which he later donated to the Lyme Regis RNLI lifeboat station to mark the opening of the building in 1997. It hangs just inside the entrance to this day.

Fred’s late wife Pat volunteered in the lifeboat souvenir shop for more than 20 years.
