Stricken motorboat assisted by Lymington Lifeboat in gusty conditions
At 10.30am on Friday 8 March Lymington Lifeboat launched for the third time this year, to a report of a 34 foot motorboat with engine failure located off Pennington Marshes.
Choppy seas and a strong wind made anchoring tricky for the stricken vessel, leaving it drifting in the western Solent and in need of assistance.
The lifeboat located the motorboat quickly and put a crewman aboard to assess the situation and ensure the anchor was holding. Once the safety of the two men aboard the motorboat was maintained, the lifeboat stood by whilst marine breakdown assistance Sea Start towed the motorboat back to Lymington.
Phil Baker commented: ‘Having lost propulsion, the casualty was being affected heavily by the prevailing weather conditions and we were glad to be able to help secure their situation, so that the boat could be recovered and fixed in the safety of port.’
The lifeboat retuned to the station, was cleaned, refuelled and was ready for service by midday.
We urge people to contact the coastguard early on Channel 16 or via 999 in the event of trouble. An emergency can always be downgraded if the situation resolves itself.
Crew: Phil Baker (helm), Declan O’Riordan, Greg Pachany and James Douch.
