A call had been made to the Coastguard by walkers who had seen some people on the beach at Ravenscar, that they believed to be cut off by the tide.

Whitby's inshore lifeboat was launched to search the beach and the local Coastguard crew attended on foot.

The lifeboat crew had just passed Saltwick Bay when they were stood down as the Coastguard had checked the area and found no one to be cut off.

Richard Dowson, helm on the inshore lifeboat said: 'The call was made with good intent, after the walkers grew concerned for the people they had seen potentially trapped on the beach. They made the right decision to call it in so we could go and check that they had reached safety.

Thanks to Whitby Coastguard who arrived on the scene quickly to establish that all was well, meaning we were able to stand down and ready the boat for tonight's training session.'

Our advice to anyone walking on the beach below the cliffs is

- Always check the tide times
- Carry a means of calling for help
- Make sure you know where your nearest exit point is from the beach and how long you have to reach it

In a coastal emergency dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
