Bude RNLI lifeboat and lifeguards invited to London to celebrate 200 years

On Thursday 23rd May some of our Bude lifeboat crew and volunteers were invited to Buckingham Palace for a 200th year garden party hosted by HRH Princess Royal accompanied by Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, and HRH The Duke of Kent.

Around 2,500 of the RNLI’s long-service volunteers, staff and their families attended, among those from across the country were lifeboat crew, lifeguards, water safety volunteers, fundraisers and recipients of meritorious service awards.

Bude RNLI president Chris, lifeboat operations manager Liam, helm Andy and Crewman Rhys, fundraiser Jill and Stephen fundraising and station treasurer attended with their partners along with Bude RNLI lifeguard supervisors Ted and Ross and lifeguard Mini.

Ross said: 'I feel extremely honoured to have been invited to the 200th year garden party at Buckingham Palace where we celebrated and commemorated those lifesavers past and present. Unfortunately the cream was on first however the scones were still delicious.'

The RNLI charity saves lives at sea. Its volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts. The RNLI operates 238 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland and more than 240 lifeguard units on beaches around the UK and Channel Islands. The RNLI is independent of Coastguard and government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 146,000 lives.
