On Sunday 28 July 2024, the RNLI Connecting Communities team arrived at Largs lifeboat station with the special RNLI 200 scroll, where they were met by volunteers from Largs RNLI alongside members of local Coastguard Rescue Teams.

The sentiment of the scroll is that it represents the RNLI’s One Crew with a single person being nominated from each area within the lifeboat station to sign the scroll on behalf of their community. At Largs RNLI the scroll was signed by representatives from the management group, the crew, the lifeboat shop and the fundraisers.

The scroll carries the words of our One Crew pledge that spells the commitment made as volunteers and staff to honour RNLI founder Sir William Hillary’s mission almost 200 years ago to save lives at sea.

The scroll itself has been created by RNLI craftspeople using materials of significance to the charity.

The wooden handle has been made by a carpenter from the RNLI’s All-weather Lifeboat Centre in Poole, where the charity builds and maintains its all-weather lifeboats, using wood from an old flagpole from Ramsey lifeboat station on the Isle of Man.

Staff and apprentices from the RNLI’s Inshore Lifeboat Centre on the Isle of Wight, have made the protective fibreglass casing and carefully set the scroll spindles and accessories into the case.

The scroll will travel through every RNLI region and country between March and October 2024, ending its journey in Douglas, Isle of Man, the former home of Sir William Hillary. It will then be displayed as a promise from those connected with the RNLI in its 200th year, to the next generation of lifesavers who will continue the mission to save every one.

Largs RNLI Lifeboat volunteer, Claire McRae, said; ‘It was a fantastic honour for Largs RNLI to be part of the connecting communities event, adding our signatures to this historic document which marks 200 years of saving lives at sea.

‘The scroll is very impressive. Everyone on station could not help but say wow as it was opened for the signing, and listening to the pledge being read was a very special moment.

‘The list of signatures captures a moment in time where we are making the promise as a lifesaving community to continue the RNLI’s mission to save every one.

‘If you get into difficulty at sea or along the coast, or spot someone else in trouble, always dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.’
