Family sail across Solent to make donation in memory to Cowes RNLI station
Family and close friends visited Cowes RNLI station today to make a donation in memory of beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Ron Poyner, who passed away on 1 June.
Following Ron’s wishes, those attending Ron’s funeral were encouraged to make a donation to the RNLI in place of bringing flowers, bringing the grand total donation to the RNLI to £476. Ron’s widow, 91-year-old Jean Poyner, made the boat trip across the Solent with her family to deliver the donation to Cowes RNLI Station in person.
Ron’s daughter, Julie Worth, and her husband Colin are avid sailors and frequent visitors to the Isle of Wight and Cowes. Colin himself became acquainted with Cowes RNLI station a few years ago, when the station’s volunteer crew responded to a collapsed casualty near Newtown, to whom Colin had administered first aid.
The family expressed their gratitude for the work of the RNLI and posed for pictures with the station’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat, Sheena Louise and volunteer crew members.
The family said:
'During Ron’s life, he worked with a number of charitable organisations and volunteered his own time to support the building of both a Guide Hall and Scout Hall. Ron chose the RNLI in recognition of all the volunteers who save the lives of those who run into difficulty at sea.'
Mark Southwell, Cowes RNLI Station Operations Manager, said:
'We are very grateful to Jean, Julie, Colin and their family and friends for their generous donation and for their visit to Cowes RNLI station. The RNLI is a charity organisation and all our crew are volunteers – donations from the public such as this allow us to continue saving lives at sea.'
