Exmouth RNLI volunteers won by a close five runs and were presented with the trophy designed and crafted by The Men’s Shed Exmouth from driftwood and recycled timber.

Jason Luff, RNLI Exmouth volunteer crew said:

‘The game was great fun and also aimed to raise awareness of safety at sea. We are grateful to Exmouth Freemasons for all the hard work they put in to ensure that the event took place safely.’

Nick Smith, Exmouth Freemasons’ team captain says:

‘Exmouth beach front offers a great opportunity to show off how our community can work together. With the help and advice of the RNLI, Exe Sailing Club, our Harbour Authorities, NCI and Exmouth Marina, discussions were held on how we might make this happen. As Freemasons from Exmouth, we think that whilst this event is not without risk, if properly organised it gives local good causes an amazing opportunity to say, “we are here” and would like to welcome you.’

Notes to editors

· The Exe Estuary extends for some 12 kilometres from the harbour entrance (Pole Sands) to Countess Wear and a further 3 kilometres to Town Quay, Exeter. The Estuary is protected from the open sea by Dawlish Warren, a natural sand spit, and by Pole Sands which forms a natural breakwater between the approach navigation channel and the open water.

· At low tide two third of its water area dries out, revealing sandbanks, mudflats and eelgrass beds which provide important habitats for marine life and feeding birds.
