Beaumaris volunteers launch to assist a paddleboarder.
On Wednesday (17 July) at approximately 4.53 pm, volunteer lifeboat crew from Beaumaris RNLI were tasked by H.M. Coastguard for a second time that day, this time relating to a report of a paddleboarder in difficulties by Perch Rock near Penmon in the Menai Strait
The Beaumaris RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew launched their Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat Annette Mary Liddington at 5.00 pm and proceeded to the area. In addition to the lifeboat volunteers, the Mobile Coastguard Rescue Teams from Penmon and Moelfre had also been tasked. The paddleboarder had managed to reach Perch Rock and a fishing vessel had been requested to remain in the area pending the arrival of the lifeboat.
Once on scene, a lifeboat crew member was placed on the rocks and having ensured no medical assistance was required, the casualty was taken aboard the lifeboat with their paddleboard and safely returned to shore, where the Coastguard Teams were on hand to assist and give further advice.
The Coastguard stood the lifeboat down at 5.40 pm and the crew returned to station, cleaning and refuelling ready for the next service call. By 6.30 pm when the volunteer crew left the station.
A RNLI spokesperson said: ‘The casualty had their mobile phone in a waterproof bag which enabled them to contact the Coastguard for assistance when needed. They were advised that a suitable floatation device should also be worn when paddleboarding, to minimise the risk of drowning in case you were to fall in the water’.
