Lifeboats News Release

Bude inshore lifeboat was launched on service on Thursday 4th July at 12:35pm, to assist Bude RNLI lifeguards with a missing swimmer at Duckpool beach, three miles north of Bude.

Both the inshore lifeboat and RWC (rescue water craft) were tasked, with 26mph westerly winds and three-foot swell running the sea conditions were rough and bumpy making the journey tricky to navigate.

The initial report was tasked to Sandymouth’s RNLI lifeguards who were asked to investigate the reports of the missing swimmer.

Upon the lifeboat and crew arriving on scene at Duckpool the casualty was safely on the beach with RNLI lifeguard Leon who performed a tube rescue to secure the casualty.

Once he had returned to the beach, the Bude Coastguard Rescue Team carried out a casualty care assessment, and advised the casualty to visit hospital for a check up.

Once the lifeboat crews were happy the casualty was in care of the coastguard and no further people were in the water, they were stood down and made the bumpy journey back to station where they cleaned and prepped for service.

With open water swimming becoming more popular we strongly advise to visit a lifeguarded beach or our beautiful sea pool at Summerleaze beach.

Always swim between the red and yellow flags and speak to the lifeguards as they can assess the conditions and give you the correct advice, always let them know your intentions and timings if going for a longer sea swim.

Our coastline isn’t really the best to swim due to the constant surf which creates and makes the rip currents run strong.
