Barry WI were welcomed to the new lifeboat station

On Wednesday 31 January, members of Barry WI were invited to the lifeboat station as a thank you for raising £1150 from a crafts fair held in November (2023).

Barry Dock RNLI Chairman Stuart McMillan gave a presentation, with Coxswain Andy Gavan and Mechanic Ben Phillips giving the visitors a full tour of the new station and its Trent all-weather lifeboat.

The women learnt how vital fundraising efforts like theirs ensure the RNLI’s volunteer crews are able to keep serving their communities and saving lives at sea.

Commenting on the generous donation, Coxswain Andy said:

‘We are very grateful and delighted with the donation which will be put towards the lifesaving efforts at Barry Dock Lifeboat Station.

‘The women have committed to their goal to raise much needed funds for our lifesaving work in the Bristol Channel, and we are so thankful they chose the RNLI as one of their charities.

‘Their contribution will undoubtedly help save lives at sea.’

This year the RNLI celebrates its 200th anniversary on 4 March 2024. The charity has been saving lives at sea since it was founded in 1824 and, in that time, its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 144,000 lives.

From triumphs to tragedies; from oar-powered boats to the modern boats used today; from running domestic impactful drowning prevention campaigns to working with others overseas. The charity is saving more lives, in more ways, in more places than ever before.

Barry Dock RNLI will be celebrating the 200th this year with local events and activities, including a Festival of the Sea in early June. To find out more and keep up to date with the latest events at Barry Dock RNLI, head to the station’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/barry.rnli.

Funded by voluntary donations, and with lifeboats crewed by specially trained volunteers, the RNLI is a truly unique rescue organisation.
