Hundreds pack church for Hunstanton RNLI 200 Christmas Carol Service
Carols filled a Norfolk church to celebrate the bicentenary of the charity that saves lives at sea. Some 300 supporters and volunteers packed St Mary's at Old Hunstanton on Tuesday 18 December for the RNLI 200 Christmas Carol Service.
After blessings and a rousing rendition of We Wish You a Merry Christmas from the band, volunteers served up mulled wine and mince pies.
This year marks the 200th anniversary of both the RNLI and the founding of a lifeboat service at Hunstanton.
Today, the station on Sea Lane is one of the region's busiest, whose volunteers operate both the fast inshore lifeboat Spirit of West Norfolk and the search and rescue hovercraft Hunstanton Flyer.
Like more than 200 RNLI stations around the coast of the UK and Ireland, they'll be on call 24/7 over the festive period, including Christmas Day.
Their work is only made possible by the RNLI’s generous supporters, who help fund the essential kit, training and equipment needed to keep crews prepared and protected.
Equipping a crew member at Hunstanton with the clothing and kit they need to keep them warm and safe at sea costs £1,300, while the average annual training cost is £1,450 per person on board the station's lifeboat or hovercraft.
