Lytham St Annes Shanty Crew raise over £6.5K for RNLI from their 2024 singing
A magnificent total raised from the Shanty Crew for Lytham St Annes Lifeboat Station.
For many years now the Lytham St Annes Shanty Crew have performed their mix of traditional and self composed sea shanties to help raise money for the Lytham St Annes RNLI Lifeboat Station, to help save lives at sea.
At the end of each year they donate proceeds from their past 12 months work to the lifesaving charity and this took place at the Lytham St Annes All-weather Lifeboat House on Monday 12 December 2024.
Receiving the donation of just over £6,700 was Chair of the Station’s Fundraising Team, Chris Wrigley, who thanked them for all their hard work and the superb total they had brought in. He also mentioned their continuing support for the station over many years, their enthusiasm and the excellent quality of their performances.
The Shanty Crew raise the money by performing at concerts and from the sale of their CDs. In the summer months when the weather is good, and sometimes even not so good, the 'Shanties' use their weekly Monday night practice sessions as a fund raising opportunity for the station by putting out RNLI collecting buckets for passers by to donate money.
This activity alone raises hundreds of pounds from the happy spectators. These outdoor practice sessions alternate between the Lytham St Annes Lifeboat Station’s two boathouses, the Inshore Lifeboat Boathouse on Central Beach and the All-weather Lifeboat Boathouse on South Promenade. They have proved so popular with the public that many bring down chairs and sit and enjoy listening to the whole evening.
Over the year the Shanty Crew have helped raise even more money which is not attributed directly to them as the money raised will go into other RNLI accounts. For example when they performed at the annual Lytham St Annes Lifeboat Open Day, the Mayor of Fylde’s charity appeal which will benefit the RNLI, and recently they performed at the RNLI’s 'Coast to Cobbles' event at Salford Quays to mark the RNLI’s 200th anniversary and the start of organised charity street collections.
Thanks to the ongoing generosity of the Shanty Crew, money raised in these ways are not included in the great total of £6,700 donated but it still benefits the RNLI and therefore saves lives.
