Tuesday 8 December saw Littlestone RNLI station becoming a hive of activity as the station was visited by the RNLI’s launch & recovery trainer to assess station volunteers.

Tractor and Head Launcher Passouts
The assessments saw trainee launch vehicle driver Ron Thrall demonstrate his skill in driving the Bendy tractor with the trailer attached with Littlestone's Atlantic class lifeboat on board as well as carrying out figure-of-eight manoeuvres on the beach, demonstrating his tractor handling skills, and all with the assistance of trainee head launcher Sarah Thompson demonstrated winching.

The role of head launcher for inshore lifeboat stations is a relatively new one and a number of fully qualified shore crew were being assessed by Gary Stanbury, the RNLI's assessor. Those achieving their qualifications after many hours of hard work are Spencer Rolfe, Sarah Thompson, Adrian Easterling, Rob Saunders, Ian Roberts, Mark Owen, Clinton Marshall and Peter Leigh who were all passed out as head launchers.

After acting as launch vehicle driver for the head launcher pass-outs, Ron Thrall was himself given the thumbs up and achieved a pass-out as a launch vehicle driver.

Lifeboat Operations Manager, John Kenny, says:

‘We are proud of all our volunteers today who have achieved so much in spite of the inclement weather, after months of hard work and dedication to their training. A special thanks go to their fellow volunteers who have helped to get them to this stage.

The RNLI’s ethos of ‘One Crew’ really shows today as we celebrate these successes.'
