Arbroath, Broughty Ferry and Montrose RNLI lifeboats tasked in search
On Saturday 30 November, lifeboats from Arbroath, Broughty Ferry and Montrose RNLI Lifeboat Stations were tasked by HM Coastguard to assist in the search for a vessel that had run aground on rocks.
Arbroath’s Atlantic 85 lifeboat, Dylan Rotchell, and D class lifeboat, Robert Ferguson, were tasked at 10.45pm by HM Coastguard to assist in the search for a vessel that had run aground on rocks just north of Elliot beach.
Due to the sea conditions and darkness, the task of searching for potential casualties was difficult for volunteer crews, and additional support was requested by HM Coastguard to flanking RNLI lifeboat stations at Montrose and Broughty Ferry.
Montrose’s all-weather Shannon class lifeboat, Ian Grant Smith, was requested at 11.32pm and launched shortly after, and Broughty Ferry’s all-weather Trent class lifeboat, Elizabeth of Glamis, was requested at 12.15am and launched shortly after.
4 hours after Arbroath had initially been tasked, the RNLI volunteer crews were stood down, with HM Coastguard satisfied that it was likely no persons had entered the water.
Ron Churchill, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Arbroath RNLI Lifeboat Station, says: ‘We would like to thank colleagues in HM Coastguard, Police Scotland and of course our flanking stations at Montrose RNLI and Broughty Ferry RNLI for their assistance.
‘Conditions were extremely challenging for all involved and the operation was carried out with the highest level of professionalism by all involved.’
