The incident occurred just upriver from the floating bridge, opposite Ironbridge. The man was in the freezing water for about 20 minutes before being rescued by a Cowes Harbour launch. Also recovered was the man’s dog, and both were landed at Whitegates pontoon, Cowes.

Cowes lifeboat, which launched just after 6 pm, was joined on the shore by Bembridge and Ventnor coastguards. The lifeboat eventually returned to station just before 7 pm.
