Yesterday (Thursday 22 August), Emma Roddick MSP visited Kyle lifeboat station to meet some of the volunteers, discuss the award-winning rescue, and find out what it takes to be a crew member on board the lifeboat. Ms Roddick began her visit by being shown around the lifeboat station and the lifeboat Spirit of Fred. Olsen, looking at the equipment and systems which enable the crew to perform their roles when out on a rescue. She then joined the volunteers in the crew room to discuss last years rescue of a walker who was lost and stuck on a small ledge for more than a day in an extremely remote part of the Scottish Highlands.

Andrew MacDonald, Helm for Kyle of Lochalsh RNLI Lifeboat, says: ‘It was a pleasure showing Emma around the lifeboat, and chatting with her about last years rescue of the missing hill walker. Ms Roddick had attended the awards ceremony in Inverness earlier in the year, but didn’t get a chance to speak with the crew who were there on the night, therefore she wanted to find out some more details of that shout and what it takes to be an RNLI volunteer.’
