Littlehampton RNLI overwhelmed by public generosity with 200 year coin challenge
On Saturday 17 August Littlehampton RNLI fundraisers set themselves and passers by a challenge to fill an RNLI 200 logo with donated coins to raise money for the lifesaving charity.
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution, well known by its abbreviation the RNLI, is 200 years old this year and fundraising teams across the UK & Ireland have been embracing the opportunity to raise the charity’s profile with a plethora of fun events and initiatives.
Outside the lifeboat station at Fisherman’s Quay on Littlehampton harbour’s east bank the fundraising team prepared for their latest enterprise by creating a faint stencil on the ground in the form of a logo that has been designed to celebrate the RNLI’s bicentenary. Over the day passers by were able to fill the logo with coins until the loose change mosaic was complete which, together with our pop-up stall, raised an impressive £500. This was part of a bumper weekend for the fundraisers who also raised approximately £1500 from a raffle and auction and for an upcoming event in Arundel which sold approximately £500 worth of tickets on Saturday alone, bringing the weekend total to some £2500.
On Bank Holiday Monday 26 August the RNLI 200th Anniversary Duck Race is being held at the old medieval bridge in Arundel at approximately 4.45pm. 2000 rubber ducks will be released into the river and sponsors of the first two ducks across the designated finish line will each win £100, the next two £50 and the next two £25. To sponsor a duck thereby raising money for the RNLI and possibly win a cash prize too tickets may be purchased at the RNLI Lifeboat Station Shop in Littlehampton, The Red Lion in Arundel and The Quill in Rustington for £2 a duck
Full details about the event are available at https://rnliduckrace2024.co.uk/ where tickets may also be purchased (please note that an online administration charge of 30 pence per ticket is applicable).
Cian Mathews, Fundraising Chair at Littlehampton, said: “It is incredible the support that the community of Littlehampton and visitors to this wonderful seaside town give to the RNLI and we are always humbled by their generosity, and that of those further afield, which enables us to carry on saving lives at sea.”
