Porthdinllaen RNLI tasked to two incidents on Friday evening
Porthdinllaen RNLI volunteer lifeboat crew were paged to an unconfirmed sighting of an inflatable dinghy being blown offshore off Trefor.
The station`s Tamar Class lifeboat, the ‘John D Spicer’ launched down the slipway at 8.10pm and as the lifeboat was passaging towards Trefor, it was re-tasked by HM Coastguard following a 999 call from a small fishing boat that had suffered mechanical failure in the Porthdinllaen area. Arriving on scene within minutes, and due to the fact, the vessel was deemed a navigational hazard, a tow was quickly established and towed back to its mooring in Porthdinllaen Harbour. With the craft and its 2 occupants now safe, the lifeboat continued towards Trefor.
Arriving on scene off Trefor point, with no craft visible, the lifeboat started a search of the area utilising all available search equipment on board the lifeboat. After an extensive search and with nothing found and no further reports of persons or craft is distress, it was deemed to be a false alarm with good intent. The lifeboat was stood down, refuelled and ready for service by 11.45pm.
Owain Williams, Coxswain at Porthdinllaen added:
'Thanks again to the volunteer lifeboat and shore crew who turned up in large numbers to launch the lifeboat. In what has been a busy period this summer it is a testament that they always turn up without fail when the call for help comes.
'Although this was a false alarm with good intent, we would encourage the public to call 999 and ask for the Coastguard if they see anybody in trouble at sea or on the coast.'
