Crosshaven RNLI rescue fisherman on inflatable dinghy
At 5.50pm yesterday evening (13 August), Valentia Coast Guard requested the immediate launch of Crosshaven RNLI's volunteer crew to a person waving for help from an inflatable dinghy at Roberts Cove.
A concerned member of the public raised the alarm after noticing the man waving for help.
Crew members Warren Forbes, Gary Heslin, Caoimhe Foster and Claire Morgan launched the lifeboat immediately and made their way to Roberts Cove in a north westerly force 5 and a half metre swell. Roberts Cove is about three miles south west of Roches Point.
On arrival, the crew found the person in an inflatable dinghy, having been fishing, anchored off the mouth of Roberts Cove and unable to retrieve his anchor because of a shoulder injury. The crew brought the casualty onboard and delivered him into the care of Crosshaven Coast Guard within Roberts Cove. The lifeboat returned to the dinghy and brought it ashore along with the casualty's fishing tackle. The casualty was wearing a lifejacket.
Helm Warren Forbes commented: ' We would like to commend the member of the public who raised the alarm so we help bring the casualty to safety.
'Inflatable dinghies are not designed for the sea and we would encourage people to instead enjoy them in a swimming pool.
'We would remind people planning a trip at sea this summer to to go prepared. Wear a lifejacket or suitable flotation device for your activity and carry a means of calling for help .'
Shore crew for the call out were Kline Pennefather, Susanne Deane, Jennifer Grey, Aidan O'Connor and Darryl Hughes. Launch Authority was Hugh Mockler.
