Islay RNLI launch for two children on paddleboard
On Saturday 10 August at 3.04pm Coastguard UK requested Islay RNLI launch to two children drifting in the sea between Bruichladdich and Bowmore on a paddleboard in Loch Indaal, Islay.
Seven of Islay’s volunteer lifeboat crew quickly launched the all-weather Severn lifeboat and began to make way down the Sound of Islay. A Coastguard rescue helicopter was nearby and quickly in attendance to help locate the children and assist if required. While the lifeboat was on route a local boat was able to reach the children and take them on board to safety.
Back on shore the children and vessel were met by local coastguard rescue team volunteers. The children were uninjured from the ordeal. All agencies were then stood down in the rescue. Islay lifeboat returned to Port Askaig by 4pm and was then made ready for service.
Speaking after the call out, and Islay RNLI representative said “Unfortunately, we have seen more call outs over the past few years to stand up paddleboards. Thankfully the emergency services were quickly called via 999. The children were wearing bright buoyancy aids and did the right thing by staying on the board even when they were far from shore. We would like to take the opportunity to remind people to check the sea area forecast before taking to the water as only a slight increase in the wind can make it more challenging to get safely back to shore.”
