Arbroath’s new D-class inshore lifeboat ‘Mintybell’ was tasked to assist in back to back call outs yesterday afternoon (5th August).

The first request for assistance was received from HM Coastguard just after mid-day after a boat was reported in distress approximately one mile off the Red Head area of the cliffs between Auchmithie and Lunan Bay.

Upon arrival on scene, the volunteer Arbroath RNLI crew established there were no casualties among those on board the yacht and, having undertaken a full assessment of the situation, decided the best course of action was to tow the casualty vessel to safety.

Montrose all-weather lifeboat was tasked to assist in the operation and they successfully towed the yacht back to Arbroath harbour.

Having successfully completed that tasking, another came immediately afterwards when two kayakers were reported in trouble at Lunan Bay. Arbroath’s inshore D-class and Montrose’s all-weather lifeboats raced to the scene, before being stood down by HM Coastguard after it was confirmed the kayakers had made their own way ashore.

It has been a busy first week on station for Arbroath’s new D-class lifeboat, Mintybell, with four ‘shouts’ in the first six days!

Arbroath’s lifeboat operations manager, Ron Churchill said “It was a busy day for our crew yesterday with the back to back shouts, and it was great to see the teamwork between ourselves and our colleagues from Montrose.

The main thing of course is achieving a successful outcome, which we thankfully saw on both taskings.

Our new D-class lifeboat, Mintybell, has certainly had a busy start to life here in Arbroath.”
