Little and Broad Haven Lifeboat Crew respond to callout

At 12.44pm the crew were tasked to reports of four young persons getting into difficulty on kayaks and stand-up paddle boards (SUPs) two miles from Broad Haven Beach. The lifeboat crew were able to assist the casualties and return them safely to Broad Haven Beach, where they were given further assistance by the RNLI beach lifeguards.

Two hours later, after the boat had returned to Little Haven for refuelling and wash down, the crew were called out again to reports of a casualty requiring medical assistance on Musslewick Sands in an inaccessible location. The crew were able to provide immediate casualty care and transport the casualty to Martins Haven where they were met by the Coastguard Rescue Team from Dale, who were able to stretcher the casualty to safety and ensure they made safe onward travel to Withybush Hospital.

Little and Broad Haven crew member Kevin Thomas, who was helming the lifeboat for both callouts, said:

'A sunny Wednesday during the school holidays definitely was a busy day for us, on both occasions the call for help came in quickly and we were able to get afloat in rapid time so each of the situations didn’t deteriorate into something more serious.'

Little and Broad Haven Lifeboat press officer Denys Bassett-Jones said:

'These callouts show the continued dedication of our crews to be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Barely had the first shout been completed and the boat returned to station then the crew were taken away from their daily lives once again to help those in difficulty.

'You should always wear a suitable buoyancy aids or life jackets for your chosen activity and always carry a means of calling for help that is kept on you at all times'.

The boat returned to station for a second wash down and the crew members were able to resume their normal working lives for what was left of a busy day all round.
