Bangor RNLI launch lifeboat to rescue two people in difficulty off Carrickfergus
Bangor RNLI came to the aid of two people on Sunday afternoon after their boat suffered mechanical failure.
At 2.00pm on Sunday (4 August) Bangor RNLI volunteers were requested to assist two people on a motorboat in difficulty between Carrickfergus and Kilroot by Belfast Coastguard.
The weather at the time was dry, slightly overcast with a moderate sea state and little breeze. The sky was clear and visibility was good.
Once the people onboard realised that there was a problem they immediately dropped their anchor and called the Coastguard for help. When the volunteer crew arrived at the scene the found the people aboard the boat safe and well. It was observed that both people were wearing their lifejackets.
The Helm assessed the situation and decided the best course of action was to establish a tow to bring the casualties to safety. RNLI crew transferred a crew member to the casualty boat and secured a tow line. The boat was then towed to the nearest safest harbour at Carrickfergus marina.
Bangor lifeboat Ruby Robinson was returned to Bangor station, refueled, washed down and made ready for he next service.
Bangor RNLI Launch Authority Kevin Byers said 'We would urge all boat owners to carry out regular maintenance checks on their vessel. Carry spare parts and tools if possible and ensure that you have a means for calling for assistance if you find yourself in trouble. If you see someone in trouble on the water or are in difficulties yourself do not hesitate to call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
'The people onboard this boat did absolutely the correct thing by calling for assistance. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank both our boat and shore crews for their efforts today.’
